Moving Company Scam Reporting
Taxonomy Code: FN-1700.1470-530
Programs that provide a hotline, website or other mechanisms that people can use to report scams involving rogue companies that offer discounted pricing to move household items and then steal the items, or hold them hostage and demand additional funds to deliver them to the new location. Signs that there may be a problem include movers that don't require an on-site inspection and provide an estimate sight unseen, an estimate that is "too good to be true" or is non-binding, a large up front cash deposit or demand for full payment up front, lack of a local address, can't (or won't) provide information about licensing and insurance, a history of company name changes, inability (or refusal) to provide references and lack of a way to contact the movers during transit.
