Carillons
Taxonomy Code: PL-7600.1500
Churches, universities, town halls and other establishments that have installed a carillon, a musical instrument which consists of at least two octaves of carillon bells arranged in a chromatic series and played from a keyboard permitting control of expression through variation of touch, either by a carillonneur or through use of an automatic chiming mechanism. A carillon bell is a cast bronze cup-shaped bell whose partial tones are in such harmonious relationship to each other as to permit many such bells to be sounded together in varied chords with harmonious and concordant effect. The bells chime at regular intervals (on the hour, quarter hour or half hour) and may be heard throughout an entire town or village or more locally depending on the height and location of the tower in which the bells have been installed.
