Programs that increase public awareness of the measures skiers, hikers, climbers, snowmobilers, snowboarders, snowshoers and other visitors to winter recreational areas can take to avoid slopes that are at high risk for avalanches and to survive an avalanche should they become caught in one. Topics may include the types and causes of avalanches; wind, temperature and snow conditions that are conducive to avalanche activity; avalanche terrain; stability evaluation procedures; safe-travel and other safety techniques; avalanche safety equipment; and avalanche rescue/self-rescue.
