A condition experienced by some women during pregnancy (antepartum or prenatal depression) or following delivery of a child (postpartum depression) that is characterized by feelings of sadness and inadequacy, lack of feeling for the baby, overconcern for the baby, crying for no reason, inability to concentrate, changes in sleeping patterns, eating too much or too little, numbness, anger, anxiety, exaggerated highs and lows, loss of interest and pleasure in things that were previously enjoyable, and thoughts of suicide or harming the baby.
